FISHER OF MEN
I always imagined that when my prayers were answered and my son’s turned to God, they would attend church and have a respect & love for God. When God moved in Ben’s life, it was bigger than I had ever expected. Yes, he is a fisherman… but in more ways than one.
Every morning, before he began his long day of commercial fishing, Ben would read his bible and then have breakfast. One morning, the “Pot Smoking Captain” came in and noticed the bible still lying out on the table. He leaned over and read what Ben had underlined. Seeing that, the next day, he deliberately left the bible laid out again and underlined more verses. Again the captain read what he had underlined. It became an everyday thing and when he didn’t have it laid out one morning, the Captain wanted to know where that bible was. They began cutting up and acting like preachers reading the Word. It didn’t matter how silly, Ben was putting out the bait.
Recently my son received a prayer napkin in the mail. The package had a number on it that had nothing to do with what was inside. Yet, for some reason the number kept sticking in his mind. The number was 419. Later that day he was listening to a Christian rap singer and he was singing about the book of Matthew. He kept thinking about that number and decided to look up Matthew 4:19. This is what he found: “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men”.
Ben took one of his friend’s moms to the doctor this week. He waited in his car and decided he would just read the Word while he waited. He noticed a woman walk by and go into a liquor store. He had some new testaments in his car and felt like he needed to give her one. When she came back out, he said, “Excuse me mam but I felt like God wanted me to give this to you and tell you that He loves you.” She started crying and began sharing problems about going through divorce. She ended up being saved right then & there. She threw the liquor away and then left.
“The steps of a righteous man are ordered of the Lord”
God is showing up in Ben’s life big time and he is always telling me things that happen. He has truly discovered the “joy of the Lord”. It’s funny, but Matthew 4:19 is the verse posted on the (August 2005) Happy Birthday Blog for Ben.
